England v West Indies T20 Betting Tips & Preview – Saturday 16th September 2017

England face the West Indies for a one-off T20 in what is a repeat of the incredible 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Final. It was the Windies who triumphed on that thrilling day in Kolkata but they are the slight underdogs for Saturday’s match at Chester-le-Street.

The most updated version of the men’s T20 ranking puts the hosts in second while the West Indies are not far behind in fourth. It’s this form of the game where the West Indies are at their best and they should put up a bigger fight than their Test side did against England last week.

Top Tips

  • West Indies to win - 11/8 at Bet365
  • West Indies to have higher opening partnership - 11/10 at BetVictor

Analysis

There are a few players who can feel hard-done to not making it into England’s 14 man squad, Samit Patel perhaps one of the clear examples. His omission goes to highlight the quality of the English side however and they boast a strong group heading into the Chester-le-Street clash. They are without two key names though in the form of Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali who have been given a rest following a busy Test summer. The absence of these two does leave England with less of that cutting edge and this could prove to be decisive.

As for the West Indies, only one change for them as Ashley Nurse comes in for Samuel Badree. They have several names who could form to make their opening pair but Elvin Lewis is one who looks nailed on. He has a tremendous record at T20 level with an average of 34.75 and a strike rate of 152. He impressed against a strong Indian side in his last T20 game for the West Indies and he alone makes the visitors worth backing to secure the highest opening partnership.

The Windies’ nine wicket victory against India in July’s one-off T20 suggests they have the ability to win here. Although unable to compete with the Indians during the ODI series, they were able to up their game for the T20 and it’s something they often do. With batters who are able to score big runs under pressure, just as they did in the World T20 Final last year, they are good value to pick up another big scalp here.

Recent Head to Head T20 Record

  • West Indies 161/6 – 155/9 England, 2016
  • West Indies 160/7 – 165/6 England, 2014
  • West Indies 155/5 – 152/7 England, 2014
  • West Indies 170/3 – 143/9 England, 2014

Other Bets

Elvin Lewis is capable of special things with the bat and the promising 25 year old seems to have a bright future ahead of him. He’s already collected three man of the match awards in his 13 T20s game so far and with his best performances coming against the top sides, he’s worth backing for a fourth award here.

With such quality in their battings ranks and players who have collected some big runs previously in this format, back the West Indies to be the team with the highest scoring batsman at evens with BetVictor. Chris Gayle has 13 half centuries in 51 T20s and Marlon Samuels has 10 in 59. England don’t have such a consistent big scorer, even Alex Hales doesn’t hit a 50 quite so often so it’s a smart bet to back one of the Windies batsmen to steal the show.
