Inter Milan v Roma Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 21st January 2018

Two Italian giants lock horns in the San Siro on Sunday evening when Luciano Spalletti’s Inter Milan host Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma in Serie A. Only three points separate these two in Italy’s top table, with Inter in third and Roma in fifth. Matches between the pair usually produce plenty of goals and talking points, let’s hope for more of the same from this one.

Being higher in the league and on their own patch, the Black and Blues head into this one as the bookies’ warm favourites. However, the Magic One, who finished runners-up to Juventus under the management of Spalletti last season, have won five of their eight away league matches up until now. Which way will this high quality fixture go in Milan at the weekend?

Inter Milan Form

Things were looking all rosy in the Inter garden when they beat Chievo 5-0 in early December to go top of the Serie A table on 39 points – since then, however, Inter’s form has rapidly gone downhill. Spalletti’s troops have lost two and drawn three of their following five, picking up just three points from a possible 15 to drop down the table.

As a consequence of their poor and surprising run of results, Nerazzurri have slipped down to third, nine points adrift of leaders Napoli and eight behind second placed Juventus. In spite of their sloppy form, only Juve have taken more points at home so far. Inter will be desperate to get back on track in this one.

Roma Form

Di Francesco’s men have also had a slump in form in recent weeks. Roma have mustered up just one Serie A win in their last five, losing three of their previous four in all competitions along the way. I Giallorossi kicked off 2018 with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Atalanta in the Stadio Olimpico a couple of weeks ago.

Worryingly for Di Francesco’s men, they have not won away from home since beating Fiorentina 4-2 in the Artemio Franchi back in early November. Since them, Roma have lost two and drawn two on the road in league and cup. Can they put things right with a vital win away from home in Milan this weekend?

Head to Head Stats

The last two between the pair have ended in 3-1 away wins. Back in February last year, Roma left the San Siro with an impressive 3-1 victory on their way to a second place finish in Serie A. However, Inter returned the favour with a 3-1 triumph of their own in the Olimpico back in August this season.

Inter’s last home success in this fixture came in October 2015 when Gary Medel scored the only goal of the game against 10-man Roma. There has only been one draw between the two in their last seven matches.

Injuries & Suspensions

Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia recently picked up an abdominal injury and could miss this one. Roma, meanwhile, will probably be without Daniele De Rossi and Diego Perotti.

Inter Milan

  • Andrea Ranocchia - Could miss out with an abdominal injury
  • Danilo D’Ambrosio - Out with a medial collateral ligament injury
  • Miranda - Defender side-lined due to a calf problem
  • Zinho Vanheusden - Unavailable until April after suffering a cruciate ligament injury

Roma

  • Gregoire Defrel - A doubt due to a knee problem
  • Daniele De Rossi - Muscle injury could prevent him playing
  • Diego Perotti - Midfielder has a thigh strain
  • Luca Pellegrini - Out with a broken kneecap
  • Rick Karsdorp - Side-lined until April with a cruciate ligament injury

Betting Tips

With neither side in good form, this could go either way at the San Siro on Sunday. Both teams will be hoping to get back on track in the title race, but neither will want to be beaten at the same time. Can Inter make home advantage count, or will Roma pile more misery on their former manager with a win in Milan?

Inter Milan to Win 2-1

This is a hard fixture to call, but Inter could just have the edge being on their own patch. We can’t see there being a lot in it, though, so check out the solid odds of 8/1 for the home team to win 2-1.

Inter Milan to Win and Both Teams to Score

Roma have scored in all bar one away league match this season, losing just one of eight in the process. As for Inter, their 0-0 draw with Lazio last time out at home was the first time they had failed to score in the San Siro in Serie A this term. The hosts to win and both teams to score is nicely priced at 3/1.

Mauro Icardi to Score Anytime

Inter’s Mauro Icardi has impressed in front of goal yet again this season. The Argentina international is available at 4/5 to notch anytime on Sunday and that looks very tempting.
