Atletico Madrid v Marseille Betting Tips & Preview – Wednesday 16th May 2018

Atletico Madrid and Marseille go head-to-head in the final of the UEFA Europa League at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in France on Wednesday night. The pair have had very different journeys on their way to this year’s final, but both teams are worthy finalists. This should be an entertaining match, although Atleti are the strong favourites to lift the trophy in Lyon.

Los Colchoneros have won the Europa League on two occasions in the past decade, while Les Phoceens have never picked up this trophy. Diego Simeone and his team have been European specialists over the last few years, will they be too strong for the French Ligue 1 outfit on Wednesday night?

Atletico Madrid Form

After being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the group stage, Atl Madrid have been a dominant force in this year’s Europa League. On their way to the last two, Madrid have seen off the likes of Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sporting Lisbon. They were then drawn against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in the semi-finals, going on to beat the Gunners 2-1 on aggregate to make it through.

Despite reaching this season’s Europa League final, Los Rojiblancos have been in patchy form over the last couple of months, losing five matches in all competitions since March. Last weekend, Atleti were beaten for the first time at the Wanda Metropolitano in La Liga, falling to a shock 2-0 loss to Espanyol. Nonetheless, Simeone’s side remain second in Spain’s top tier, and they will make the trip to France for this final in full confidence.

Marseille Form

Marseille have had an excellent season under Rudi Garcia, reaching the Europa League final and finishing in the top four of Ligue 1. With two league matches left to play, the Olympians can still finish second behind Paris Saint-Germain, as they are only two points behind second-placed Lyon and a point adrift of Monaco, who currently occupy third spot. Garcia’s troops have two chances to secure Champions League football for next season.

Marseille’s Europa League journey to the final began all the way back in July against Oostende of Belgium. After navigating through two qualification rounds, Les Phoceens went on to finish runners-up to Red Bull Salzburg in EL Group I on just eight points. The French team have really come to life in the knockout rounds, beating the likes of Braga, Athletic Bilbao, Red Bull Leipzig and Salzburg.

Head to Head Stats

These two have not met since the Champions League group stage way back in the 2008-09 season. In a group with Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven, Atleti finished second, while Marseille were eliminated in third.

Madrid beat Marseille 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon in the first game, with Sergio Aguero and Raul Garcia getting the goals for Atleti. The reverse match in December 2008, which was the final group fixture, ended in a forgettable goalless draw at the Stade Velodrome.

Betting Tips

Previous results and recent form counts for very little in a one-off final, but it’s hard to look past Atleti in Lyon. As we touched on, not many teams in European football have more experience when it comes to major finals than Atl Madrid. Besides, Marseille have never won this tournament, and they have not lifted a European trophy since winning the Champions League back in 1993. Having said that, we do expect Garcia’s men to have a real go at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday evening.

Atletico Madrid to Win -1

Since arriving in the Europa League, Atleti have won six of their eight matches, scoring 17 times along the way. As for Marseille, even though they have played a staggering 18 matches, the French team have been beaten five times in this year’s competition. Atleti should prevail in Lyon, so back Simeone’s men to win with a -1 goal handicap at 7/4.

Atletico Madrid Win & Both Teams to Score

Marseille have failed to score in four of their five European defeats this term, although they have notched in each of their last seven in all competitions. Los Colchoneros to win and both teams to score is available at 10/3.

Atletico Madrid Win 3-1

As for the correct score in this final, we’re being drawn to a 3-1 Atleti triumph, which is generously priced at 14/1.
