Burnley v Chelsea Betting Tips & Preview – Thursday 19th April 2018

Burnley have the chance to leapfrog Arsenal into sixth place this Thursday as they look to secure a place in next season’s Europa League. Failure to do so isn’t a huge problem for the Clarets though as seventh place will also be rewarded with European football provided that Southampton don’t win the FA Cup.

Chelsea will also be joining them in the competition next season barring a shock climax to the season. A top four finish looks out of the question for the Blues even if they claim all three points at Turf Moor.

Burnley Form

Five consecutive victories is quite a way to end a winless run that stretched 12 games. Between mid-December and the end of February, Sean Dyche’s side recorded six losses, six draws and zero wins but this poor patch of form is well and truly behind them now. Their current winning streak began with a hard fought home win against Everton and then a thrashing victory away at West Ham. The 3-0 win over the Hammers was the first time Burnley had scored three goals in a game since the opening day of the season.

Confidence didn’t fade away during the international break and on the Clarets’ return they comfortably saw off the challenge of a West Brom side fighting for their Premier League status. Sean Dyche used to be the master of winning matches 1-0 but 2-1 seems to be his new scoreline. It’s a result Burnley have managed four times in their last five matches including recent wins against Watford and Leicester. Their greater goal threat is partly down to the return of Chris Wood. The New Zealand international has scored six in six following his comeback from injury.

Chelsea Form

It looked as though Chelsea’s poor 2018 form was going to continue when they found themselves 2-0 down against Southampton which half an hour left to play. The Blues managed to turn things around in fantastic fashion though when Olivier Giroud was brought on from the bench. Two goals from the ex-Arsenal man plus a strike from Eden Hazard was enough to secure a Chelsea a win, ending a run of three successive away league defeats. It was an important comeback for the Blues given that they face Saints again next week for an FA Cup semi-final clash.

While you have to praise Chelsea’s spirit in the game against Southampton, it was a match in which their flaws were once again on display. The Londoners have been letting in avoidable goals and they’ve gone nine games without a clean sheet as a result. At the other end of the pitch, Saturday’s match was the first time they had scored more than two goals in a game since mid-February. The Blues had looked completely toothless upfront until Giroud replaced Alvaro Morata and it’s far from the first time the Spaniard has played poorly this season.

Betting Tips

Despite their superior form, Burnley are available at 3/1 to extend their winning streak to six matches on Thursday evening.

Burnley to win or draw

Chelsea have been poor since the turn of the year, registering just four Premier League victories. Boss Antonio Conte looks like he could be on his way out as he does not seem to have the answers to fix Chelsea’s problems. While they managed to claw things back against Southampton, an away test against in-form Burnley will prove to be far trickier.

Both teams to score

Burnley used to be notoriously hard to break down at Turf Moor but they are currently on a run of seven home games without a clean sheet. Chelsea have gone the same amount of goals without a shutout on the road too so neither defence are on the top of their game right now. As a result, it’s easy to see both sides scoring in this match and decent odds are available on this to happen.

Burnley 2-1

Burnley have grown very familiar with a 2-1 win in recent weeks and they can be backed at 14/1 to record the same scoreline once again. It’s rare Chelsea are beaten by a big margin so any victory for the home side is more than likely going to be a slender one.
