PSV Eindhoven v Ajax Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 15th April 2018

Dutch rivals PSV Eindhoven and Ajax square off in a huge Eredivisie matchup at the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon. With only four games left, PSV lead the way at the top of the division by seven points, meaning a win over second-placed Ajax at the weekend will see them win the league title for the third time in four seasons.

However, an away victory will blow the race wide open again, especially as Ajax then have two winnable home games on the horizon. Fixtures between these old rivals are usually thrilling affairs, with this one expected to be another memorable match in Eindhoven. Will PSV win the title, or can the Amsterdam team cause an upset?

PSV Eindhoven Form

Since being knocked out of the UEFA Europa League back in August, PSV have been exceptional in the Dutch Eredivisie. On their way to top spot with four matches left, Eindhoven have won a staggering 25 of their 30 league games, losing just three times along the way. However, one of those defeats did come to Ajax back in December.

Philip Cocu’s men never let their heads drop after a humiliating 5-0 loss at Willem II back in March, going on to win each of their last three, scoring 11 times in the process. Defeat in Tilburg last month was their first reverse since losing in Amsterdam in December. The Red and Whites have certainly been the most consistent side in the division up until now.

Ajax Form

Ajax are doing everything in their power to keep up with PSV’s relentless pace at the top of the table. Since falling to a surprise 2-1 defeat to Utrecht back in November, Erik ten Hag’s side have only been beaten once in 19 Dutch Eredivisie games. After a 3-2 loss at Vitesse Arnhem in early March, Ajax have picked up 12 points from a possible 12.

Despite their solid form pretty much all season, it will all be in vain if they lose in Eindhoven on Sunday. A win at the Philips Stadion, though, will keep their title ambitions just about alive.

Head to Head Stats

As we touched on, one of PSV’s three league defeats this term came at the hands of Ajax in Amsterdam in December. After an even first half, Ajax blew PSV away in the second period, netting three times in just over 10 minutes. However, that was their first home win over their rivals in four attempts.

Last season, after a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, PSV sealed a 1-0 triumph in Eindhoven just shy of a year ago. Back then, Jurgen Locadia’s 25th-minute strike proved to be the difference. In recent years, these two have been pretty evenly matched.

Injuries & Suspensions

PSV will be without the injured Maximiliano Romero and Ramon Pascal Lundqvist. Ajax have several players on the injury list, but Ten Hag has no fresh injury or suspensions to deal with ahead of this crunch clash in Eindhoven.

PSV Eindhoven

  • Maximiliano Romero - Defender still out with a thigh injury
  • Ramon Pascal Lundqvist - Midfielder out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury last month

Ajax

  • Daley Sinkgraven - On the mend from a long-term knee injury
  • Frenkie De Jong - Could miss out with an ankle problem
  • Abdelhak Nouri - Out with a head injury
  • Benjamin van Leer - Still recovering from a cruciate ligament problem
  • Mateusz Gorski - Side-lined with a shoulder issue
  • Nick Viergever - Unavailable due to an ankle injury
  • Vaclav Cerny - Missing for the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage

Betting Tips

Both teams will be desperate for the points on Sunday. An Ajax win or a draw will keep the title race alive as we head into the last three games, but a home victory will take the trophy back to Eindhoven. With Alkmaar miles behind in third, these two sides have without doubt been the two standout teams in the division this season.

PSV Eindhoven Win

PSV have been outstanding on their own patch this term. February’s 2-2 draw with Heerenveen is the only time they have dropped points at the Philips Stadion in the league. This could be a close one, but the hosts should nick it. Have a punt on PSV to win the match and seal the title at 6/4.

PSV Eindhoven Win & Both Teams to Score

Only PSV (34) have taken more points on the road than Ajax (33) this term. However, no side in Holland’s top flight have scored more away goals than Ajax’s 42 so far. Put a few quid on the home side to win and both teams to score at 10/3.

PSV Eindhoven to Score First

PSV have scored the opening goal in 13 of their 15 home league matches so far. Back the hosts to score first this Sunday at superb odds of 4/5.
