Cardiff City v Sunderland Betting Tips & Preview – Saturday 13th January 2018

Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City will be looking to get back on track when they welcome Chris Coleman’s Sunderland to the Cardiff City Stadium for an EFL Championship fixture on Saturday afternoon. The Bluebirds will move back into second with a win this weekend, while the Blacks Cats can lift themselves out of the drop zone with three points.

Despite losing four in a row in the Championship for the first time under Warnock, Cardiff head into this one as the clear favourites to claim a win. However, with Sunderland fighting for their Championship lives, it could be interesting afternoon in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff City Form

Cardiff were just four points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers when they beat Hull City at home in mid-December. However, four defeats later, the Bluebirds now find themselves a huge 14 points behind the leaders and surely out of the title race. Injures have finally taken their toll on Warnock’s side, who are winless in their past five league and cup matches.

Nevertheless, Cardiff must put their poor form behind them if they are to keep up with the likes of Derby County, Bristol City and Aston Villa – plus one or two others – in the race for the automatic promotion places. Only Wolves have a better home record than the Bluebirds so far, and three points this Saturday will put the Welsh side back on track for promotion. Now isn’t the worst time to hit a sticky patch but Cardiff mustn’t let their poor run go on any longer and three points is a must.

Sunderland Form

Sunderland have failed to shrug off last season’s abysmal year in the Premier League as they sit rock bottom of the Championship table with over half of the campaign gone. Despite a change in manager, the Blacks Cats have struggled to get a positive run going, and their 1-0 loss to Barnsley at the Stadium of Light last time out saw them drop back down to the foot of the table.

Sunderland have picked up more points away from home than at the Stadium of Light this season, winning three times on the road and just once at home. In their last away fixture in the Championship, Aiden McGeady’s first-half strike was enough to give the Mackems a priceless 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Head to Head Stats

When these two teams met in Wearside back in September, goals from Craig Bryson and Joe Ralls gave the Bluebirds a 2-1 win. In their last matchup at the Cardiff City Stadium, the Black Cats came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in the Premier League over four years ago.

Cardiff have won just two of the last seven league matches between the two, and Sunderland are unbeaten in their last three visits to the Welsh capital. Can this head to head record help the visitors to an upset in this one?

Betting Tips

Both sides are in desperate need of the points in Cardiff. However, the hosts should have enough quality within their ranks to see off the Championship’s bottom team on home soil this Saturday.

Cardiff City to Win to Nil

Despite losing their last two at home, Cardiff have been very strong at the Cardiff City Stadium this season. The Bluebirds have won without conceding four times on home turf in the league, so back them to win to nil (13/8) again at the weekend.

Cardiff City to Win -1

50% of Cardiff’s 14 Championship wins have come by more than one goal this term. Have a punt on City to win -1 at very healthy odds of 2/1.

Cardiff City to Win 2-0

Two of Cardiff’s last five victories have ended 2-0. Sunderland, meanwhile, were beaten 2-0 in the Emirates FA Cup by Middlesbrough last weekend. At tempting odds of 13/2, put some money on a 2-0 home win here.
