Manchester United v Stoke City Betting Tips & Preview – Monday 15th January 2018

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United will be looking to see off managerless Stoke City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Monday night. The Red Devils, who are second behind runaway leaders Manchester City, head into this home match as the strong favourites to put three points on the board.

As for the Potters, who parted company with Mark Hughes last week, they are sitting dangerously close to the drop zone at present. Whoever takes charge of the team could do with a positive result on Monday night. However, will United cruise to another win on home turf?

Manchester United Form

Although they sit second in the table, it’s been a difficult season for United as they have had to watch their city rivals run away with things at the top of the table. Nevertheless, with the title seemingly out of the equation, the Red Devils must focus on second spot, fending off the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur along the way.

Having gone four games without a win during December, Mourinho’s men have hit back with successive league and cup victories. After beating Everton 2-0 in their last Premier League match, Man Utd saw off EFL Championship side Derby County by the same scoreline in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend.

Stoke City Form

Stoke have been on an abysmal run of form over the past few months, which ultimately cost Hughes his job at the Bet365 Stadium. Since winning away at Watford in October, the Potters have mustered up just two league wins in 12. Last time out in the Premier League, City fell to a 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United.

To make matters even worse, Stoke were beaten 2-1 at EFL League Two outfit Coventry City in the FA Cup last Saturday. City are in a relegation scrap this season as they occupy 18th spot in the table having gained just 20 points from 22 games. Whoever takes over will no doubt have his work cut out in Staffordshire.

Stoke City v Newcastle United 1st January 2018 0-1 Loss
Chelsea v Stoke City 30th December 2017 5-0 Loss

Head to Head Stats

Despite their troublesome season, Stoke did play well in September’s 2-2 home draw with Man Utd earlier in the campaign. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting netted twice to cancel out strikes by Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Last term, the pair played out two uneventful 1-1 draws.

In fact, four of the last six meetings between Stoke and Man Utd have ended level. Meanwhile, United have won just two of their last eight against the Potters.

Injuries & Suspensions

Man Utd have no fresh injury concerns, and they will be hoping to welcome back Antonio Valencia. Erik Pieters is pushing for a return for Stoke, but Glen Johnson could miss out.

Manchester United

  • Michael Carrick - A doubt due to heart problems
  • Antonio Valencia - Could miss out with a hamstring injury
  • Eric Bailly - Out until March with an ankle problem
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Side-lined due to a knee injury
  • Ashley Young - Full-back serving a suspension

Stoke City

  • Glen Johnson - Doubtful with a knee injury
  • Erik Pieters - Hamstring problem could keep him out
  • Bruno Martins Indi - Out with a groin strain
  • Ryan Shawcross - Skipper side-lined with a calf injury

Betting Tips

Things have been very tight in this fixture in recent times, but we can’t see it being as close this time around. The pair are at different ends of the table, and Stoke are certainly a team in turmoil at the moment. Man Utd will be looking to capitalise on that this Monday by seeing City off with ease.

Manchester United to Win to Nil

Jose’s troops have been very hard to break down at Old Trafford this season. In fact, the Red Devils have kept an impressive 11 clean sheets on their own patch so far, with 10 of those resulting in wins. Man Utd have won their last two in league and cup without conceding, so back them to win this one to nil at 5/6.

Manchester United to Win and Over 2.5 Goals

Stoke have lost five and drawn two of their seven on the road since winning at Vicarage Road in October. In those seven games, the Potters have mustered up just six goals. With Stoke being so poor away from home recently, we like the look of Man Utd to win an over 2.5 goals (4/6) this Monday.

Jesse Lingard to Score Anytime

Jesse Lingard has been in red-hot form of late, netting eight in his last 10 outings for United. The England international will be keen to keep up his fine goal-scoring record, so put some money on him to score anytime on Monday at 13/10.
