Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner Betting Tips & Predictions – Sunday 20th January 2019

Will the evergreen Manny Pacquiao continue his brilliant professional record this weekend? The 40-year-old has won 60 of his 69 fights to date, but as he prepares to step out for a 70th time, will his record continue? Or, could we be seeing the Filipino going one fight too far?

Pacquiao steps up to face Adrien Broner on Sunday, and the Filipino is the strong favourite to come away with a victory. He faces an experienced opponent, but also a fighter who has a patchy record against some average fighters. Will he catch Pac-Man at the right time, or come up short?

Fight Info

Pacquiao returns to the States for the first time since 2016 this weekend, putting his WBA welterweight belt on the line in Nevada. It’s a bit of a trip for the challenger, too. Broner is used to fighting on the east-coast, now he heads west to meet one of the true greats of 21st century boxing.

Manny Pacquiao Recent Fights

It’s almost four years since Pac-Man lost that massive bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. There are rumours that this string of fights are building towards another meeting with his old rival, with recent outings not coming close to the stature of that super-fight. Even this one is struggling to capture the imagination, despite Pacquiao picking up a belt in his last win.

Victory in Malaysia in July saw him bounce back after losing the WBO crown to Jeff Horn. That points loss to the Kiwi continued a streak of fights going the distance for Pac-Man. He set out to end that against Matthysse, claiming a vital seventh round knockout victory.

Lucas Matthysse 15th July 2018 Win Technical Knockout
Jeff Horn 2nd July 2017 Loss Unanimous Decision
Jessie Vargas 5th November 2016 Win Unanimous Decision

Adrien Broner Recent Fights

Broner had his first professional draw last time out, after the judges failed to separate him and Jessie Vargas. However, it’s not too long ago that Pacquiao saw off Vargas via a unanimous decision by the judges, so that could suggest that this is going to be an uphill struggle for the challenger. He’s already taking on a huge name, alongside meeting a fighter in better form.

Before that, Mikey Garcia saw off Broner in New York, meaning it’s almost a year since his last victory. Recent results don’t suggest that Broner is being undervalued ahead of this fight, he has plenty of work to do in order to return to winning ways in Nevada this weekend. He’s returning to this arena for the first time since a 2015 loss to Shawn Porter, with a similar fate looking likely.

Jessie Vargas 21st April 2018 Draw Majority Decision
Mikey Garcia 29th July 2017 Loss Unanimous Decision
Adrian Granados 18th February 2017 Win Split Decision

Fight News

The big news building up to this clash was Adrien Broner’s arrest, which put the fight in jeopardy. He failed to turn up for a court appearance in December, which led to his arrest before later being released. His coach has maintained that there’s going to be no impact on the bout from the incident, but it’s hard to imagine it hasn’t affected his training, or hit the fighter personally in the build-up.

On Paquiao’s side, the big story is the link with Mayweather. The American has supposedly retired from the sport, with a 50-0 record. However, there’s speculation that he’s going to put that on the line against the Filipino, which would certainly cut an impressive cheque for the pair. Boosting the speculation is the fact that Money will be ringside at this one, possibly preparing for an announcement after the bout.

Analysis: Pac-Man to Deal KO Blow

Pacquiao has clearly not been happy with his lack of early wins of late. An aging fighter is bound to feel a run of seven straight fights that went the full 12 rounds. However, this does seem set up for Pac-Man to secure an early victory. He’s priced up at 1/3 to win this bout, while Broner sits out at 9/4 to cause a surprise win. We are siding with the favourite on this one, but how will he win it?

Pacquiao via Knockout

Pacquiao is not just aware of his lack of KO wins of late, he is aiming to put it right. It was his intention ahead of the meeting with Matthysse, and he edged that one in the seventh round. Little from the challenger suggests that he’s ready to cause a shock in this clash, with disappointing results pointing to a gulf in class here, we’re backing Pac-Man to win it early. Pacquiao to win via KO is our pick, priced at 12/5.

Under 10.5 Rounds

We can certainly see this one finishing up early, but it’s been heavily backed to go the distance. However, the favourite will likely be setting up with a game-plan to finish up before the bell. We think there’s fantastic value on backing the bout to wrap up within 10 rounds, especially as it is priced up at 2/1. Pacquiao’s previous KO wins have been pretty early on, and we see him picking up a similar result in this clash.
