Brazil v Costa Rica Betting Tips & Preview – Friday 22nd June 2018

Brazilian Flag Costa Rican Flag

Tite’s Brazil face Oscar Ramirez’s Costa Rica at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg on Friday afternoon for their second 2018 FIFA World Cup Group E game. Having been frustrated by Switzerland in a 1-1 draw in their opening match, the Brazilians will be on the lookout for their first victory of this World Cup. As is usually the case, Selecao are the strong favourites to claim all three points.

The Costa Ricans will be desperate to avoid another defeat after losing their opening fixture in Russia to Serbia. After causing a shock by beating the likes of Uruguay, Italy and England to top spot in their group four years ago, can Los Ticos upset the five-time World Cup winners on Friday? Having dropped points in their opening game, Brazil will be eager to bounce back with an important win here. Tite’s team should have enough in their locker to edge past Costa Rica in Saint Petersburg.

Brazil Form

Despite going into the tournament on a four-game winning streak, Tite’s side struggled to dazzle in their opening game in Russia. After dominating and taking the lead through a rocket strike by Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho after just 20 minutes, the floodgates were expected to open against Switzerland. However, to be fair to Vladimir Petkovic’s side, they hung in there and equalised on 50 minutes courtesy of Steven Zuber’s header.

Despite dropping two points in their first match in Russia, Brazil are still the overwhelming favourites to top Group E. At times last Sunday, Canarinho played some scintillating stuff, and they will back themselves to get the better of the Costa Ricans this Friday afternoon.

Costa Rica Form

In a tight fixture with Serbia at the Cosmos Arena last Sunday, Aleksandar Kolarov’s superb free-kick for the Serbians proved to be the difference in Samara. The Costa Ricans huffed and puffed after that but could not find a way through. Ramirez’s troops are now just one defeat away from being eliminated from the World Cup.

Costa Rica have been in pretty poor form lately, with last weekend’s defeat their third successive loss. In fact, Los Ticos have sealed just two wins since September 2017, beating Scotland 1-0 and Northern Ireland 3-0. Unfortunately for them, we can’t see them getting anything from this one against the Brazilians in Saint Petersburg.

Head to Head Stats

These two nations last went head-to-head in a friendly match in New Jersey three years ago, with a Hulk goal settling a tight game in Brazil’s favour. The last competitive matchup between the pair came at the Copa America in 2004, which Brazil won 4-1. In fact, the Brazilians have won the last eight meetings between the nations.

Costa Rica’s one and only victory over the Selecao came all the way back in March 1960. The Costa Ricans ran out big 3-0 winners in a Panamerican Championship match in La Sabana, San Jose. However, Brazil have won every other meeting between the two.

Injuries & Suspensions

New Manchester United star Fred could miss out again after picking up an injury in training. Neymar, meanwhile, is also a doubt after suffering a knock in Brazil’s draw with Switzerland. Costa Rica defender Ronald Matarrita is out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury.

Betting Tips

After drawing with the Swiss, Brazil will be eager to get their first win on the board in Russia this Friday. Some of the favourites have struggled to break down the less fancied teams at this World Cup so far, so Brazil will need patience in Saint Petersburg. Costa Rica will be desperate to avoid a defeat, but that’s easier said than done against the most experienced country in World Cup history. Tite’s troops should have too much quality for the Costa Ricans at the Krestovsky Stadium.

Brazil to Win 3-0

Brazil looked to be on their way to a comfortable win when Coutinho gave them the lead after 20 minutes in their opener, only for the Swiss to catch them off guard early in the second half. Brazil won’t make the same mistake again, and we fancy them to win well on Friday. The 3-0 Brazil victory has caught our eye at 11/2.

Brazil to Win Both Halves

Brazil certainly created chances against the Swiss, failing to build on Coutinho’s opener. However, we’re backing them to win both halves (6/5) of this one.

Brazil to Win to Nil

Brazil’s experienced defence should keep Costa Rica’s attack out on Friday, so put some money on Tite’s boys to win to nil at 4/7.
