Chelsea v Newcastle United Betting Tips & Predictions – Saturday 12th January 2019

Chelsea will seek to strengthen their position in the top four this weekend when facing Newcastle in Saturday’s evening kick-off. Both Arsenal and Manchester United are sniffing around the final Champions League spot so the Blues cannot really afford to be slipping up in matches such as these.

The odds are stacked heavily in favour of the home side winning this one, which is wholly unsurprising given Newcastle’s poor form and lowly league position. The Magpies have secured victory in just one of their last eight league matches and could drop into the relegation zone if results earlier in the day go against them.

Chelsea News: Bayern step up chase for Hudson-Odoi

View From the Stamford Bridge Tunnel

After seeing a growing number of English youngsters head to the Bundesliga, you cannot help but feel that such an invitation may appeal to Callum Hudson-Odoi. First team opportunities have not come thick and fast at Chelsea with the winger playing just one league game all season. Maurizio Sarri wants the academy graduate to stay but it has been rumoured that Bayern have lodged a bid that meets his £35m valuation. The hot prospect has a big decision to make this January but for now he has refused to give anything away.

Fabregas farewell may have been premature

A teary-eyed Cesc Fabregas walked off to a standing ovation in the FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest. Amid reports that the Spaniard had secured a deal with Monaco, it looked as though he had played his last match for the London club. Chelsea director, Marina Granovskaia has put the move on hold however until the club has been able to secure a replacement. This means that the 31-year-old, whose current deal ends in the summer, could potentially feature this weekend.

Newcastle United News: Almiron deal hits stumbling block

Newcastle United Match at St James Park

Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron is reportedly the number one target for Rafa Benitez this January transfer window. The Newcastle boss is unlikely to have much money at his disposal but striking a deal for the Paraguayan did seem on the brink of completion. That was until the playmaker demanded a weekly salary of £100,000, a figure at which the Magpies could only baulk. Club sources have described the wage as “astronomical” meaning that a deal will be off unless he is open to some serious compromise.

Fernandez and Diame both doubts

Federico Fernandez and Mohamed Diame have featured in a combined 36 league matches for Newcastle this season. Benitez appears to be a fan of both but he could be without the pair if they unable to shake off their respective injuries. Ex-Swansea man Fernandez has not been seen since injuring his hip on the 29th December. Diame on the other hand has been struck down by a similar problem, something that he has suffered from previously. His absence in particular would be a big blow as fellow midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-Yeung are both unavailable.

Analysis: Newcastle faring poorly against the top six

One worrying statistic for Newcastle ahead of this game is that they have lost all seven meetings versus top-six opposition so far this season. On occasion, the Magpies have given their more illustrious opposition a scare but never have they had anything to show for it. Three of their next four Premier League games are against the top-six too so should their record not improve then the Toon Army may edge closer to the relegation zone.

Chelsea unlikely to be handed many scares

Only Liverpool can boast a better defensive record than Chelsea this season. The Blues have shipped in just 16 goals after 21 league matches and their defence looked as good as ever during the mid-week cup clash with Tottenham. After nullifying the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son for much of the match, Sarri’s men should have no problems containing a toothless Newcastle attack. The Magpies have the league’s second worst scoring record, averaging just 0.71 goals per game. They have fired blanks in three of their last four contests and look set to do so again, with a Chelsea win to nil therefore offering appeal at 5/6.

Newcastle can avoid a battering

Chelsea winning this game to nil is definitely a bet worth having a flutter on but don’t expect scorelines of 4-0 or 5-0 this Saturday. Newcastle are reasonably robust on their travels, losing just three of their 10 league trips outside St James’ Park. Not only this but they’ve only conceded 12 goals away from home this season, the best record in the bottom half and the same as third place Tottenham. They will be weakened a little if Fernandez is ruled out but Fabian Schar has largely been a dependable deputy. With this in mind, a Chelsea win combined with under 3.5 goals (19/20) is another tempting option for this match.

Recent Matches

These two clubs have had rather differing fortunes over the past few years but their record against each other doesn’t reflect this. Since 2012, the Magpies record against the London outfit reads five wins, one draw and seven defeats.

26th August 2018: Newcastle United 1 – 2 Chelsea

Newcastle seemed more than content to play for a draw in this match, operating with a five-man defence and claiming just 19% possession. The plan was working until Fabian Schar tripped Marcos Alonso in the box, allowing the Blues to open the scoring from the penalty spot. Parity was resorted just minutes later when a rare foray forward saw Joselu expertly score with his head. One final moment of late drama followed though as Andre Yedlin diverted Alonso’s drive into his own net.

4th November 2018: Newcastle United 3 – 0 Chelsea

The most surprising result on the final day of the Premier League season saw a safely mid-table Toon Army easily beat top four hopefuls Chelsea. Although the Blues did have an FA Cup final the following weekend, the level of the performance remained hard to justify. The visitors were outclassed for large portions of the game, frequently finding themselves second to every ball. It turned out to be Antonio Conte’s last league game in charge of Chelsea as failure to secure Champions League football proved to be his undoing.

28th January 2018: Chelsea 3 – 0 Newcastle United

Michy Batshuayi had struggled for minutes since moving to Chelsea but the Belgian showed off what he was capable of in this FA Cup test. The ex-Marseille striker grabbed himself a first-half brace during a man of the match display. The result never looked in doubt by his point but Marcos Alonso made sure his side would feature in the fifth round when dispatching a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.
