Previous Match Tips

Maurizio Sarri takes his Chelsea team to St Mary’s to play Mark Hughes’ Southampton on Sunday afternoon. Having picked up two draws from their last two Premier League games, the Blues will be looking for all three points this weekend. As expected, the Londoners are fancied to prevail in this one.

The Saints, who survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last term, could be in for another long season this time around, as they have mustered up just one league win from seven games so far. Hughes and his team could really do with a positive result against the Blues on Sunday.

Southampton News: One Win in Seven a Concern for Hughes

Southampton kicked off their Premier League season by taking just one point from their opening three games, drawing with Burnley and losing to Everton and Leicester City. However, the Saints picked up their first win of the season against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last month, with Danny Ings and Pierre Hojbjerg on the scoresheet in the 2-0 victory. Since then, however, Southampton have drawn one and lost two of their last three in the league. Last time out in the Premier League, Hughes’ boys crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, leaving them in 16th place on just five points.

Saints’ Home Form Must Improve

Southampton have had three winnable games at home this term, but the Saints have only managed to accumulate two points from a possible nine. Sandwiched in between draws with Burnley and Brighton was a 2-1 loss to Leicester. Only West Bromwich Albion, who were relegated to the EFL Championship, picked up fewer points at home in the Premier League last season, with the Saints winning just four of their 19 league matches at St Mary’s. Southampton’s results at home will need to improve drastically if they want to avoid being in another relegation scrap this term.

Chelsea News: Blues Looking Strong Under Sarri

Chelsea made a faultless start to their Premier League season, securing five straight wins. The Blues saw off the likes of Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Cardiff City. However, they head to St Mary’s having drawn their last two in the league. Having been held to a 0-0 stalemate at the London Stadium by West Ham United, the Blues then drew 1-1 with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Blues Good on the Road

Since Sarri arrived on the scene in the English capital, Chelsea have been very good away from home. The Blues started the Sarri era in the Premier League with a 3-0 win at Huddersfield, with away victories at Newcastle, PAOK Salonika (in the UEFA Europa League) and Liverpool (in the EFL Cup) following. Last month’s 0-0 draw with West Ham remains the only time that the London outfit have not won on their travels this season. Chelsea will be hoping to continue their fine form on the road with another away triumph at the weekend.

Belgian on Fire for Sarri

Eden Hazard has been in outstanding form for the Blues this term, scoring seven times in eight fixtures in all competitions. The Belgian scored in successive games against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Cardiff earlier in the campaign, helping himself to a hat-trick against the Bluebirds. Hazard also netted in each of the cup and league games against Liverpool last week. When the Belgium international is firing on all cylinders for Chelsea, the Blues are very hard to stop. Will Chelsea’s number 10 get his name on the scoresheet on the south coast this weekend?

Analysis: Blues to Seal Another Away Win

Chelsea look very strong under Sarri, and the Blues will back themselves to leave Hampshire with all three points this weekend. Southampton have struggled for consistency lately, with the Saints winning just one Premier League match at St Mary’s since January. In truth, this should be a stroll in the park for the visitors.

Away Side to Cruise to All Three Points at St Mary’s

With Liverpool playing Man City this weekend while the international break looms, Chelsea have a great chance to close the gap on the leaders. The Londoners are capable of winning well at St Mary’s, so take a punt on the away team to prevail with a -1 goal handicap at 6/4.

A Clean Sheet for the Blues

Chelsea have managed to keep three clean sheets in the Premier League this term, with two of those resulting in wins. The away side should keep the hosts at bay on Sunday, and we like the look of the strong odds of 7/4 for Chelsea to win to nil.

Hazard to Get His Side Up and Running

We’ve just about run out of superlatives to describe Hazard these days, as the attacker is in the form of his life at the Bridge at present. Chelsea’s main man will be keen to add to his six Premier League goals for the season this weekend. Back Hazard to score the opening goal on Sunday at 15/4.

Recent Matches

Southampton and Chelsea met on three occasions in all competitions last season, with the Blues winning all three. In fact, Chelsea have won each of the last six league and cup meetings between the two. Meanwhile, the Saints have won only one of their last 11 matches against the London side in all competitions, with their last victory in this fixture coming in October 2015.

22nd April 2018: Chelsea 2 – 0 Southampton

The last meeting between the pair was an FA Cup semi-final back in April. Although the Saints had one or two chances, Olivier Giroud’s superb goal lit the semi-final up at Wembley Stadium just after the break. Alvaro Morata made sure of the 2-0 win with eight minutes left on the clock.

14th April 2018: Southampton 2 – 3 Chelsea

In this corresponding fixture last term, Chelsea came from two goals down to seal a 3-2 win at St Mary’s. Goals from Dusan Tadic and Jan Bednarek put Southampton 2-0 up, but Giroud’s strike in the 70th minute was the start of the comeback. Hazard netted five minutes later before Giroud scored again in the 78th minute to give the Blues an unlikely win. The Frenchman was certainly a thorn in the Saints’ side last term.

16th December 2017: Chelsea 1 – 0 Southampton

Only one goal separated the two when they went head-to-head at Stamford Bridge back in December of last season. Marcos Alonso’s stunning free kick on the stroke of half time proved to be the difference in a narrow 1-0 home win for the Blues.
