Manchester City v Shakhtar Donetsk Betting Tips & Predictions – Wednesday 7th November 2018

Manchester City welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the Etihad Stadium for a UEFA Champions League Group F fixture on Wednesday night. Having lost their opener, Pep Guardiola’s men have won their last two to sit top of the group, a point above French Ligue 1 outfit Lyon. Donetsk, meanwhile, have picked up two points from a possible nine so far and so will be up against it unless they can upset the odds here.

As expected, Man City head into this home match as the overwhelming favourites to secure the win. City will put one foot in the Round of 16 with three points against the Ukrainians on Tuesday. After putting six past Southampton in the Premier League last Sunday, how many will City’s devastating attack get in midweek against an opponent who can struggle away from home in this competition?

Man City News: Citizens Sitting Pretty at the Top of the Premier League

Man City have been in imperious form of late, winning each of their last five in all competitions. City went two points clear at the top of the Premier League at the weekend, thumping Southampton 6-1 at the Etihad after Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Arsenal. The Citizens have blown away most of their opponents this season, scoring three or more goals in a game on seven occasions already. Pep and his team will be on the lookout for another big win on Wednesday and will fancy their chances given the score in the reverse fixture.

Good Recovery by City

Man City kicked off this season’s Champions League campaign with a surprise home defeat to Lyon. The Citizens were uncharacteristically poor on the night, losing 2-1 to the French side on home soil.

Guardiola’s men then bounced back with a hard-fought victory at Hoffenheim, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 in Germany. David Silva scored with three minutes left to give the Manchester club a crucial three points. Silva was then on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win at Shakhtar in their last Champions League outing, with Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva getting the others in what was a very good result in Ukraine.

City Looking Unstoppable

Since losing to Lyon, which remains their only loss of the season, Man City have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 matches in all competitions. Out of the 17 league and cup games that they have played this term, City have failed to win just three times. During their 10-game unbeaten run, only Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield have stopped Man City from winning. Pep’s boys will take some stopping in the Premier League while this could finally be their year in the Champions League.

De Bruyne Setback for City

Kevin De Bruyne had just returned from a long injury, but the influential midfielder hobbled off in City’s 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Fulham last week. De Bruyne suffered ligament damage, which will keep him out until December. On the plus side, however, Ilkay Gundogan is back in training after a hamstring problem, although Nicolas Otamendi is still out with a tendon issue.

Shakhtar Donetsk News: Miners on Top in Ukraine

Shakhtar are top of the Ukrainian Premier League table after winning 12 of their opening 14 games. Donetsk have looked very strong in their domestic league so far, scoring a superb 36 goals in the process. In fact, since losing 3-0 to Man City last month, Paulo Fonseca’s side have won three in a row, beating Dynamo Kiev 2-1 at the Metalist Stadium in a huge match at the top of the table last weekend. However, three of their next four games are away from home, starting with a trip to Manchester in midweek.

Donetsk Capable of Causing an Upset in Group F

Before being beaten 3-0 by Man City in their previous European match, Shakhtar had opened up their Champions League campaign with two respectable draws. Donetsk scored late to earn a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim before holding Lyon to a 2-2 stalemate at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Unfortunately for Fonseca’s side, they failed to hold on to a 2-0 lead in France. Still, Shakhtar will not give up on a place in the top two of Group F until it’s mathematically impossible and the battle for that second spot (behind City) looks set to go to the final game.

Injury Crisis in Midfield for Fonseca

Shakhtar could be without midfielders Romero Bonfim Marlos, Taras Stepanenko and Barcellos Freda Taison for Wednesday’s match at the Etihad. Meanwhile, forward Fernando is still recovering from a leg injury.

Analysis: Citizens Far Too Strong for the Miners

With Man City in such fine fettle at the moment, no side will relish the prospect of facing Guardiola’s gladiators right now, least of all at the Etihad. The Citizens are wiping the floor with everyone, and Donetsk could be on the wrong end of a cricket score if City are at their best in midweek. This should be an easy win for the Premier League leaders, especially with the visitors missing some key men.

Home Side to Dominate from Start to Finish

City raced into a 3-0 lead after just 18 minutes against Southampton on Sunday. The Citizens blew the Saints away from the first minute to the last in the resounding 6-1 win, finding themselves 4-1 up at half time and in a position to take their foot off the gas a little. We fancy the hosts to be winning at half time and full time on Wednesday, which you can get at 2/5.

Another Big Victory for City

The Citizens have won by more than two goals on seven occasions across all competitions this term, including against Shakhtar Donetsk in the reverse match a fortnight ago. There’s good value in odds of 5/6 for City to win -2 on Wednesday.

Sterling to Keep up Fine Goalscoring Form

Raheem Sterling has been in superb form this season, scoring six times in the Premier League, helping himself to a brace on Sunday. Sterling is still waiting for his first Champions League goal this term, though, but we fancy the England international to get up and running in Europe on Wednesday. City’s No. 7 is priced at 10/11 to score anytime in this one and given we fancy them to win big that seems great value about a player whose confidence is currently sky high.

Recent Matches

These two sides met in the group stage of the Champions League last season, with the home team coming out on top on both occasions. Overall, the pair have gone head-to-head three times, with Man City winning twice and Shakhtar picking up just one win.

23rd October 2018: Shakhtar Donetsk 0 – 3 Manchester City

A couple weeks ago, Man City cruised to a 3-0 win over Shakhtar at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv. Pep’s team dominated the game, taking the lead after 30 minutes thanks to a David Silva strike. Aymeric Laporte doubled City’s advantage five minutes later, with Bernardo Silva completing the scoring with 20 minutes left. Man City were worthy winners in Ukraine in a game where they were able to put their poor start to the competition very much behind them.

6th December 2017: Shakhtar Donetsk 2 – 1 Manchester City

Man City were already confirmed as group winners ahead of this trip to Ukraine which allowed Pep Guardiola to make several changes from his usual starting XI. It wasn’t a completely meaningless match for them though as they were enjoying a 28 game unbeaten streak. Their invincibility was finally broken however as a half-strength City side were unable to deal with Shakhtar’s attacking flair. Despite the loss, Guardiola was quick to praise the performance of his young players, specifically Tosin Adarabioyo, Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz.

29th September 2017: Manchester City 2 – 0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Guardiola’s men made it two wins from two in their Champions League group but they were made to work hard for the three points in Manchester. The Premier League leaders were in rampant form ahead of the match but their Ukrainian guests managed to keep their attacking riches reasonably quiet. The visitors has chances to score through Marlos and Facundo Ferreyra but such opportunities went begging. Although they ended up losing, Shakhtar exceeded most people’s expectations by being so competitive in the match.
