Previous Match Tips

Marseille and Red Bull Salzburg go head-to-head in the Stade Velodrome for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final on Thursday night. Not many would have envisioned these two clubs getting this far, but both teams fully deserve to have a crack at reaching next month’s Europa League final.

Marseille are fancied to win on the night at the Velodrome, as well as being the bookies’ favourites to progress to the final outright. However, Marco Rose’s men have done a remarkable job to reach the last four, and it would be foolish to rule them out just yet. Things were tight when the pair met in the group stage, expect more of the same on Thursday.

Marseille Form

Marseille have made it through to the last four of the Europa League by finishing runners-up to Salzburg in Group I before beating Braga, Athletic Bilbao and Red Bull Leipzig in the knockouts. In the previous round, after a 1-0 defeat in Leipzig in the first leg, Rudi Garcia’s side sealed an excellent 5-2 win over Salzburg’s sister club in the Velodrome.

Marseille head into this European semi-final in decent shape. In fact, that defeat to Leipzig is one of only two losses since late February. After drawing 0-0 at home with Montpellier in Ligue 1, the Olympians have won their last three in all competitions, scoring a staggering 13 goals in the process. Garcia’s side currently sit fourth in Ligue 1, a point behind second-placed Monaco.

Red Bull Salzburg

RB Salzburg have once again been the dominant force in the Austrian Bundesliga this season. With just a handful of games left in their domestic league, the Red Bulls have a huge 11-point lead over Sturm Graz. After 31 games, Salzburg have won 21, drawn eight and lost just two. They have also reached the final of the Austrian Cup.

Salzburg have been a breath of fresh air in the Europa League, going unbeaten on their way to first place in the group stage, winning three and drawing three. Rose’s side have reached the last four by beating Real Sociedad, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio in the knockout rounds. Along the way, a 4-2 defeat in Rome remains their only Europa League loss this season. Will their incredible European journey continue beyond the semi-finals?

Head to Head Stats

These two sides squared off for the first time in the group stage back in September. Munas Dabour’s 73rd-minute strike proved to be the difference in what was a pretty even contest at the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim.

The duo then met at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille in the final group game. That was an even tighter match as nothing could split the two in a goalless draw. Nevertheless, the point was enough to put Marseille through with Salzburg as Group I runners-up.

Injuries & Suspensions

Marseille will be sweating on the fitness of Steve Mandanda, Boubacar Kamara and Hiroki Sakai. As for Salzburg, they could be without forward Patson Daka and midfielder Christoph Leitgeb for their trip to France.

Marseille

  • Steve Mandanda - Stopper a doubt with a thigh injury
  • Boubacar Kamara - Could miss the first leg after spraining his ankle
  • Hiroki Sakai - Doubtful with a knee issue

Red Bull Salzburg

  • Patson Daka - Likely to miss out with a muscle injury
  • Christoph Leitgeb - Midfielder recently picked up a groin strain

Betting Tips

Having got this far, both Marseille and Salzburg will be absolutely desperate to overcome one more hurdle and reach the Europa League final in Lyon. As we touched on, Garcia’s men are the bookies’ favourites to progress, but Rose’s side have passed every European test so far, beating some massive clubs to make it through to the last four. After two tight and tense affairs earlier in the competition, this two-legged semi-final between Marseille and Salzburg could go either way.

Draw

A draw or even a narrow defeat will be a good result for Salzburg. As for Marseille, they will be hoping to take a decent lead to Austria with them. With only one goal scored in the previous two meetings between these evenly matched teams, don’t expect a hatful of goals on Thursday. We can see this first leg ending in a draw, which you can get at strong odds of 11/4.

1-1 Draw

The 0-0 draw at the Velodrome remains the only away game that Salzburg have failed to score in during this year’s Europa League. We can see the Austrians netting in Marseille, so have a punt on the 1-1 draw at 6/1.

Half Time – Draw

The first half could be anxious as both teams feel each other out in this semi. Back this to be level at the break at 11/8.
