Previous Match Tips

Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli and Thomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain go head-to-head in a mouth-watering UEFA Champions League Group C fixture on Tuesday night. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool currently lead the way in the group, with Napoli one point behind and PSG two points off the top. With the Reds playing Red Star Belgrade this week, this is a huge fixture for both teams at the Stadio San Paolo.

Paris, who are flying high in the French Ligue 1 at present, are fancied to win in Naples on Tuesday. However, like they proved at the Parc des Princes a couple of weeks ago, Gli Azzurri are no pushovers. With both sides eager for a win in Italy, this promises to be another entertaining affair between Napoli and PSG and one that may well decide who makes it out of the group.

Napoli News: Partenopei Undefeated in Six

Napoli have made a decent start to their Serie A campaign, winning eight, drawing one and losing two so far. However, Partenopei already find themselves six points behind champions Juventus, who have dropped just two points so far and once again look unstoppable in Italy. Since losing 3-1 to the Old Lady in Turin back in September, Napoli have gone six league and cup games unbeaten, winning four and drawing two. Last Friday night in Serie A, Dries Mertens scored a hat-trick in a convincing 5-1 home win over Empoli at the San Paolo. Ancelotti’s men are third in Italy’s top tier, behind second placed Inter Milan on goal difference.

Strong Start in Europe

Napoli have made a decent start in Champions League Group C, winning one and drawing two of three games. After being held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Red Star in Serbia on matchday one, Gli Azzurri scored late to beat Liverpool in Naples, with Lorenzo Insigne netting an injury time winner. Napoli then battled to a draw with PSG in Paris, leading twice in the eventual 2-2 stalemate. Unfortunately for the Italian outfit, an Angel Di Maria goal recued a point for the hosts in the 93rd minute.

Ancelotti Has All the Experience in the World

In Ancelotti, Napoli have a very experienced manager. The 59-year-old has won a number of trophies during his illustrious 23-year managerial career, winning the Champions League on three occasions with two different clubs. Ancelotti has coached several European powerhouses over the years, including Juventus, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Can the Italian take Napoli far in the Champions League this season and add yet more sheen to his already stunning CV?

Paris Saint-Germain News: 100% Record in Ligue 1

Since Tuchel arrived at the Parc des Princes, PSG have won every game in Ligue 1 so far. Paris have won 12 out of 12, scoring a staggering 41 goals along the way and sweeping all aside with real ease. The champions are already a whopping 11 points clear at the summit of France’s top division.

Since losing 3-2 at Liverpool in their opening Champions League game of the season, Tuchel’s troops have won eight and drawn one of their last nine in all competitions, with that draw coming against Napoli in Europe two weeks ago. Baring a monumental turnaround, the Parisians look set to seal a sixth title in seven seasons. However, whilst things are rosy domestically, many pundits feel that the lack of competition in Ligue 1 leaves PSG a little undercooked for the bigger challenges of the UCL.

Average Start in the Champions League

Despite their sheer dominance in Ligue 1, Paris have struggled to get going in the Champions League thus far. PSG were poor at Anfield in their opener, going on to lose 3-2 to Liverpool. However, they responded emphatically with a huge 6-1 win over Belgrade at the Parc des Princes, with Neymar helping himself to a hat-trick. Unfortunately for Tuchel and his side, they could only follow that up with a 2-2 home draw with Napoli last time out. Paris are one of the Champions League favourites and this is the competition their owners really want to win, so failing to get out of the group will be a disaster for the French giants.

Cavani Could Miss the Trip to Italy

Edinson Cavani recently picked up a knock to his thigh, which has kept him out of PSG’s last two matches. The Uruguay international is back in training but Tuesday’s game could come too soon for the prolific striker. If he does sit this one out, PSG will no doubt miss his presence up top, as the 31-year-old has scored six goals in 10 appearances for Paris this term. Meanwhile, Dani Alves is still recovering from a cruciate ligament issue while Colin Dagba and Lavyin Kurzawa are both sidelined.

Analysis: Another Thrilling Affair Between the Two

Napoli and Paris played out a thriller just two weeks ago, and we could be in for more of the same on Tuesday. With Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of Group C, this is a vital fixture for both, with the losers leaving themselves with plenty of work to do with just two matches left. Napoli may be the home team, but we can see PSG securing a crucial three points from their trip to Naples and giving themselves a great chance of making the last 16.

Away Side to Edge It

Things were very close between these sides in Paris a fortnight ago, with the Parians needing a last-gasp goal just to earn a point. We fancy the pair to get on the scoresheet again in midweek, so check out the strong price of 11/4 for the away team to win and both teams to score at the San Paolo.

Brazilian to Fire First

Neymar has been in tremendous form in front of goal this season, scoring an impressive 14 times in 18 appearances for club and country so far. The Brazil international netted what turned out to be the winner in a 2-1 victory over Lille last weekend. Neymar is available at the tempting odds of 10/3 to score the opening goal on Tuesday.

Paris to Win by a Narrow Scoreline

Paris have scored exactly two goals in each of their last two, with both matches ending in wins. Last Friday, the Red and Blues claimed a 2-1 victory against Lille in Ligue 1, and we like the look of that same scoreline in this one. PSG to win 2-1 in Naples is very nicely priced at odds of 17/2.

Recent Matches

The game in Napoli two weeks ago was the first ever competitive meeting between the two sides. Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain did meet in a friendly at the Stadio San Paolo back in 2014, with the French side running out 2-1 winners.

24th October 2018: Paris Saint-Germain 2 – 2 Napoli

It was a topsy-turvy game when these two teams locked horns at the Parc des Princes in the reverse fixture last month. Napoli took a surprise first half lead courtesy of a strike by Lorenzo Insigne. An own goal put PSG level on the hour but Dries Mertens restored Napoli’s lead with 13 minutes left. Angel Di Maria rescued a draw for the home side right at the death. Despite a valiant effort by the away team, the 2-2 draw was just about the right result on the night.

11th August 2014: Napoli 1 – 2 Paris Saint-Germain

Back in August 2014, Napoli welcomed PSG to the Stadio San Paolo for a pre-season friendly. Both teams fielded strong teams on the day, with Paris just coming out on top. Gonzalo Higuain put the hosts 1-0 up shortly after half time, but goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore turned the game around to give the away team a 2-1 win in Naples.
