Roma v Juventus Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 13th May 2018

Juventus claimed a fourth straight Coppa Italia crown on Wednesday and this weekend they can secure a seventh consecutive Serie A title. Due to their vastly superior goal difference over Napoli, the risk of the Old Lady being caught is next to none. To make mathematically certain however, a point will do for Juventus no matter what Napoli do in their remaining fixtures.

While Juve sit a whisker away from the title, Roma are ever so close to securing a place in the Champions League next season. Even if Inter are victorious in their game on Saturday, Roma need just a point from their remaining two matches to guarantee themselves a spot in the top four.

Roma Form

The top four race in Italy’s top-flight this season has been an especially tight one but Roma have held their nerve to move into third spot right when it matters. Although they were dumped out of the Champions League 7-6 on aggregate by Liverpool, despite a valiant effort in the return leg, it has not negatively impacted their league form. Di Francesco’s men have claimed maximum points from their last four matches although results have not shown the whole picture. They managed comfortable victories against SPAL and Chievo but the Giallorossi made hard work of their matches against Genoa and Cagliari.

Roma’s home test against Genoa kick-started their winning streak but it could have been a different result on another day. Alessandro Florenzi missed several guilt edge chances during the match and his profligacy was almost punished on a couple of occasions by Genoa who threatened an equaliser. On the balance of play Roma were still the better side in the match but this cannot be said when away against Cagliari. The home side created some huge opportunities for themselves after going a goal down early but paid the price for their wasteful finishing.

Juventus Form

The reigning Italian champions experienced a bit of a wobble last month when drawing away at Crotone then losing to Napoli 1-0 at the Allianz Stadium. Massimiliano Allegri had set up against Napoli happy to play for a goalless draw and his plan almost came off until Napoli headed home from a corner with just minutes to spare. The Old Lady ended the match without a single shot, paying the price for their unadventurous display. It looked as though Juve might fall to another defeat a week later against Inter but this time a miraculous comeback saved the day.

Despite Inter being reduced to 10 men after just 18 minutes, the home side dug deep to take a 2-1 lead against the league leaders. An 87th minute own goal from Milan Skriniar put Juventus back on level terms though and Gonzalo Higuain completed the dramatic comeback two minutes later. The Bianconeri were forced to come from behind against Bologna last weekend too but did so with more time to spare on that occasion. If Juve had looked a little nervy before, they certainly didn’t in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday. Allegri’s men kept their patience in the Stadio Olimpico and proceeded to thrash Milan in emphatic style.

Head to Head Stats

Juventus edged past Roma when they went toe to toe earlier on in the season, the third consecutive time they recorded a 1-0 win at home against the side from the capital.

The Bianconeri may dominate this fixture on their own turf but they’ve struggled when facing Roma away, winning just one of the last seven meetings.

14th May 2017 Roma 3 - 1 Juventus Roma Serie A
17th Dec 2016 Juventus 1 - 0 Roma Juventus Serie A

Injuries & Suspensions

Massimiliano Allegri only has the one unavailable player for this match while Di Francesco must figure out how to deal with the recent loss of defender Kostas Manolas.

  • Kevin Strootman - Could recover from his rib injury in time for this match.
  • Gregoire Defrel - Sprained ankle will likely rule him out.
  • Kostas Manolas - Injury sustained before Cagliari match looks to have ended his season.
  • Rick Kardsdorp - Remains out for several more months.
  • Diego Perotti - Argentine’s ankle injury keeps him out of action.

  • Juan Cuadrado - Suspended after notching up his fifth league yellow card last week.

Betting Tips

Neither side would be dissatisfied with a draw here as it guarantees Juventus the league title and Roma a place in next season’s Champions League (if not already confirmed on Saturday).

It’s not too hard to see either side winning this match. Roma have won six of their last seven home fixtures and have a good recent record when facing Juve at the Stadio Olimpico. Juventus however secured a fantastic victory at Roma’s ground just days ago in the Coppa Italia final and have fewer absences to deal with. With little to choose between them, it’s worth backing this contest ending up all square.

Both Teams to Score

Roma have scored in six of their last seven home matches and how they didn’t find the net against Fiorentina still has their fans scratching their heads. They fortuitously kept a clean sheet against Cagliari but the absence of Kostas Manolas was evident as the Giallorossi put in a very shaky performance. Juventus haven’t been as solid as usual in recent away tests, with all of their last four matches on the road having seen both teams score.
