Sampdoria v Napoli Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 13th May 2018

Napoli need a miracle if they are to end up with the Serie A title this season. Maurizio Sarri’s men trail Juventus by six points and -16 in goal difference with just two games left to play. Sampdoria will need a similarly unlikely ending to the campaign if they are going to have a shot of European football next season.

Thanks to Juventus winning the Coppa Italia, whoever finishes seventh will be entered into the Europa League qualifiers but Sampdoria find themselves five points off the pace.

Sampdoria Form

Some inconsistent performances in recent weeks have seen Sampdoria’s hopes of securing Europa League football fade away. Week by week they’ve looked a different side, not securing the same result back to back in their last seven matches. It’s their contrasting home and away form which has been almost entirely responsible for this. The Blucerchiati have lost their last three away tests, heavy defeats to Juventus and Lazio plus a 1-0 defeat to bottom half Sassuolo last weekend. While the scoreline was closer last Sunday, it was still an incredibly one sided affair at the Mapei Stadium.

Sampdoria have gone three consecutive away matches without scoring but they managed to convert four times during their last match at home. Cagliari came to visit at the end of April but were brushed aside by a clinical Sampdoria side. In the home game prior to this the Blucerchiati could only find the one goal against Bologna and this one came very late. Substitute Duvan Zapata squirmed a shot home after the visitors were unable to clear their lines. Marco Giampaolo’s men can consider themselves fortunate to have secured the win as neither side created much for themselves during the match.

Napoli Form

Three consecutive away draws seemed to have put Napoli out of the running for the Scudetto but they ended this winless away streak with a hugely important win against Juventus. The visitors largely dominated the play at the Allianz Stadium and got their reward late on when Kalidou Koulibaly rose highest to head home from a corner. This closed the gap at the top of the table to just one point and the Napoli players could start believing once again. A week after their hugely important victory, Napoli travelled to Fiorentina but this time they wouldn’t be in such a jubilant mood come full time.

Six minutes into the game in Florence and a red card was shown to hero turned villain, Koulibaly, giving his side an uphill battle they could not overcome. Giovanni Simeone opened the scoring after 34 minutes for Fiorentina and after this the home side took control of proceedings. A man down, Napoli never looked like mounting a comeback. Things would go from bad to worse a week later as the Partenopei twice surrendered a lead against Torino who scored with the only two shots they had on target.

Head to Head Stats

Napoli improved on their excellent record against Sampdoria earlier on in the season, the 3-2 win making it 13 games unbeaten against the Genoa based club. Sampdoria have enjoyed little success in this fixture for many years but they have been able to consistently find the back of the net against Napoli. The last eight fixtures between the two sides have seen both sides score at least once.

Fully fit squad.

Betting Tips

Normally you’d fancy Napoli to win this game but with speculation growing over Sarri’s future and many players linked with a move elsewhere, will the Partenopei be giving this game their all?

Sampdoria to win or draw

Napoli’s season is effectively over and their team could very well be dismantled in the summer. All these off-field rumours are hardly going to aid their chances here and their thin squad has started to show signs of fatigue in recent weeks. Sampdoria are not a top side but they’ve lost just one of their last 10 home fixtures and are superbly priced to avoid defeat against a deflated Napoli.

Over 3.5 goals

The last six meetings between these two clubs has produced a whopping total of 30 goals. Defending is not on the menu whenever they face off and this is set to be the case once again. Napoli’s rearguard hasn’t been as solid as usual in recent weeks and Sampdoria managed a four goal haul in their last home game. The Blucerchiati have however shipped in seven goals during their last two games against top four opposition (Juventus & Lazio) and will surely conceded at least a couple here.

Both Teams to Score

At odds of 1/2, big returns aren’t available for this bet but it looks like being a banker for this match.
