Uruguay v Saudi Arabia Betting Tips & Preview – Wednesday 20th June 2018

Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay face Juan Antonio Pizzi’s Saudi Arabia in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Group A match at the Rostov Arena on Wednesday afternoon. The Uruguayans may have left it late to beat Egypt in their opening match, but La Celeste head to Rostov-on-Don as the overwhelming favourites to claim a big win here. Three points for Tabarez’s Uruguay will take them safely through to the Round of 16 with a game spare.

After being humiliated by tournament hosts Russia last Thursday, the Saudis will be doing everything in their power to avoid another heavy defeat in midweek. Unfortunately for Pizzi’s side, they will need a miracle to get anything from this at the Rostov Arena. Uruguay should be far too strong for the Green Falcons, and a place in the knockout rounds waits for Tabarez and his side.

Uruguay Form

Uruguay were made to work very hard for their three points by Egypt last Friday. With Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani misfiring, they needed an 89th-minute header by Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez to claim an underserved victory in Yekaterinburg. Nevertheless, good teams find a way to win when not playing well, and that’s exactly what this talented Uruguayan team did in their opening game at this World Cup.

Tabarez’s troops go into this game in Rostov-on-Don in good form overall, having won each of their last four, including Friday’s victory. In fact, since losing 3-0 to Italy back in June last year, the Sky Blue have only been beaten once. After falling to a defeat in a friendly to Austria back in November, Uruguay have secured successive wins over Czech Republic, Wales, Uzbekistan and Egypt. Tabarez definitely has the players at his disposal to take the country far in Russia.

Saudi Arabia Form

Competing in Group A was always going to be a tall order for Saudi Arabia, but Pizzi’s team were pretty hopeless in their opening game against Russia. After conceding just 12 minutes in, the Green Falcons fell apart, shipping four more goals in Moscow to lose 5-0. Defeat for the Saudis on Wednesday will see them eliminated from the competition.

Worryingly for Saudi Arabia, last Thursday’s heavy loss was their fourth straight reverse. Before losing to Russia, the Saudis had been beaten by the likes of Italy, Peru and Germany in World Cup warm-up matches. Despite making an excellent job of qualifying, the Asian nation have lost nine of their last 15 games in all competitions. Pizzi’s boys will huff and puff, but we can see them losing once more here.

Head to Head Stats

Despite Uruguay being a far superior footballing nation these days, they have never beaten Saudi Arabia. The pair have only met twice, with the Saudis winning one and the other ending in a draw.

In their last meeting in Jeddah just four years ago, Naif Hazazi’s injury-time goal earned the Saudis a 1-1 draw in a friendly. Prior to that, they last went head-to-head in a friendly match in Dammam way back in 2002. In a thrilling game, Saudi Arabia won 3-2 despite going a goal down to a Diego Forlan strike after just four minutes.

Injuries & Suspensions

Both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia have no injury or suspension concerns ahead of this clash at the Rostov Arena.

Betting Tips

By their high standards, Uruguay were very poor in their opening game. Even though Egypt’s main man Mohamed Salah did not feature, the Egyptians were able to cause the Uruguayan defence one or two problems, as well as stifling Uruguay’s star-studded attack at the other end. However, Saudi Arabia are an inferior team to Egypt, so we’re expecting Tabarez’s boys to secure a comfortable victory in Rostov-on-Don this Wednesday afternoon.

Uruguay to Win to Nil

Uruguay have been very hard to break down in recent games, keeping four clean sheets on the bounce since losing 2-1 to Austria back in November last year. In contrast, Saudi Arabia have scored just one goal in their last three games, shipping 10 along the way. With the superb Diego Godin at the back, we can see the Uruguayan defence keeping the Saudis out with ease on Wednesday. Back Uruguay to win to nil at 8/15.

Uruguay to Score in Both Halves

After firing blanks in their opening match at this World Cup, both Suarez and Cavani will be hoping to get their campaign up and running in midweek. There’s goals in this for Uruguay, and we fancy them to score in both halves at 8/13.

Luis Suarez to Score First

He may not have been anywhere close to his best against Egypt, but Suarez remains as deadly as ever. The Barcelona man will be keen to make amends in this one, so put some money on him to score first at 11/5.
