ISPS Handa Vic Open Betting Tips & Predictions – Thursday 7th February 2019

The European Tour courted controversy with their first ever tournament in Saudi Arabia last week but this week’s first at the ISPS Handa Vic Open has been warmly welcomed. For the first time in European Tour history both a men’s and women’s tournament will be held concurrently at the ISPS Handa Vic Open.

As well as an influx of international talent in the men’s tournament the bulk of the field is made up of Australian golfers. They will get huge backing from the watching fans at 13th Beach Golf Links who may well be treated to another home winner in the shape of Lucas Herbert who is well priced at 16/1 with bet365.

Course Info

The ISPS Handa Vic Open will feature alternating tee shots between the separate men’s and women’s tournaments. To ensure that such a high number of competitors can get their rounds in the event is hosted on both the Beach and Creek Courses at 13th Beach Golf Links. The weekend will be confined to the Beach Course and there will be cuts after 36 holes and 54 holes in both tournaments.

Both courses are short by modern standards and vary a bit in how they feel. The Beach Course is a genuine links course with features such as pot bunkers and thick rough framing the undulating fairways. The Creek Course is a little less challenging especially off the tee and both have large greens so players will have to hit the right parts or leave themselves some very long putts.

Recent Winners

This is the first time that the Vic Open has been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. It’s a historic tournament though which has been won by some of the biggest names in Australian golf since its establishment in 1957. International players have been turning up for the Vic Open more often in recent years but Australian golfers have won all but a handful of renewals.

Analysis: Previous Links Form Required

Given that three rounds of the ISPS Handa Vic Open will be played on the Beach Course it makes sense to back players who have shown an ability to play well on links courses. The Beach Course may be a modern links but it is still very much a links layout which will require a certain amount of imagination, the ability to manipulate ball flight and a rock solid short game especially given the size of the greens.

Herbert Can Make European Tour Breakthrough on Home Soil

Lucas Herbert is one of a number of impressive Australian golfers plying their trade on the European Tour. He’s impressed fans and his fellow pros over the last couple of years and is surely close to securing his maiden win on the European Tour. He would love that win to come on Australian soil and may well manage it at the Vic Open where he has performed well in the past.

Herbert’s performances at 13th Beach Golf Links have improved over the years and his last appearance in 2017 yielded a sixth place finish. He’s playing better than ever and has confidence from some quality performances in big European Tour events so the 16/1 that bet365 are quoting about Herbert’s chances look very tempting.

Dunne to Relish Links Test

Form is a very funny thing in sport and particularly in golf. From month to month golfers go from feeling as though they can’t miss to incredibly uncomfortable when standing over the ball. Paul Dunne knows all about this as he has ridden some impressive runs to secure big pay cheques but then fallen short of expectations when his game is in less than tip top shape.

Dunne’s streaky play means he’s the sort of player who can secure some big payouts from the bookies if punters get on at just the right time. That time may well be now. He struggled generally in the desert but seemed to find something over the weekend in Saudi Arabia. The way that he coped with the wind last week is a big tick for the Vic Open as is his wealth of links golf experience so back Dunne each way at 66/1 with BetVictor.

Can Syme Grab This Opportunity?

Connor Syme is having to work incredibly hard to fight for his future on the European Tour. His exemption category means that he only gets to start in a select few tournaments and as such must make the most of every chance that he gets. The young Scotsman hasn’t been seen on the European Tour for a while now and so will be chomping at the bit to get going in Geelong.

Growing up in Scotland, Syme played a lot of links golf so should feel at home relatively quickly at 13th Beach Golf Links. Providing he can cope with the pressure of having to perform, Syme could well secure a very important finish which makes him a tempting outside bet at 300/1 with Betfair.

Final Verdict: Lucas Herbert to Win

The European Tour’s co-sanctioning of the Vic Open has added a host of players who have the game needed to win but Lucas Herbert is rightly getting a lot of support in the betting just as he will get from the galleries in Geelong. He looks very much to have the right tools for the job in addition to his previous experience of the Vic Open so is the man the others have to beat at 16/1 with bet365.
