AC Milan v Sampdoria Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 18th February 2018

Gennaro Gattuso will be looking to maintain his side’s eight game unbeaten domestic run when the Rossoneri take on Sampdoria in the San Siro this Sunday evening. Sixth place Sampdoria currently occupy the final guaranteed Europa League spot in the Italian top flight. Victory for Milan here would put the two sides level on points however, making the battle to secure European football next season an even more intense one.

AC Milan Form

Quickly after sacking Vincenzo Montella at the end of November, Gennaro Gattuso was announced as his replacement. Things got off to a poor start and in only his second game in charge the former Milan midfielder drew to rock bottom Benevento after their keeper scored in the dying moments. Since Christmas though, things have picked up and Milan haven’t lost a single domestic match. Gattuso’s men are now unbeaten in eight despite facing the likes of rivals Inter and, on two occasions, Lazio.

In order to push on to the next level, Milan need to start scoring more goals. No side in the top half of Serie A has netted fewer times and this is despite knocking four past SPAL last weekend. It’s at home where the problem is most noticeable as the Rossoneri have found the net just 11 times at the San Siro in Serie A. Their lack of a regular goalscorer has cost them plenty of points already this season and current top scorer Suso has just one goal since the middle of December.

Sampdoria Form

Sampdoria are also enjoying an unbeaten streak of their own although it’s a bit shorter, standing at five matches. It’s just what they needed after losing to Benevento in what was just the relegation-bound side’s second victory of the season. Marco Giampaolo would not have minced his words after that defeat and it’s certainly had the desired effect. Three wins and two draws have followed, 11 points that have helped strengthen Sampdoria’s push for a spot in the Europa League next season.

They’ve not been taking points from teams near the foot of the table either. The Blucerchiati took four points from mid-table Fiorentina and Torino plus another four from Roma. It was almost six points they earned against Roma too but a late goal from Edin Dzeko denied them the win when playing in front of the home crowd. They got their revenge however at the Stadio Olimpico when Daniel Zapata scored the decisive goal. This win should serve them well ahead of another tricky away test as they look for back to back wins on the road for the first time this season.

Injuries & Suspensions

Franck Kessie has started every Serie A game for Milan this season but he’ll be forced to sit this one out in what could be a major blow for his team.

Milan

  • Andrea Conti - Has been out since September after rupturing his ACL.
  • Marco Storari - Back up keeper is still suffering from a calf problem.
  • Nikola Kalinic - Major doubt due to adductor inflammation that ruled him out of SPAL clash.
  • Franck Kessie - One too many yellow cards means he will miss out through suspension.

Sampdoria

  • Dennis Praet - Expected to be out for at least a couple more weeks with a thigh strain.

Betting Tips

Although they’ve struggled for goals this season, can Milan’s four goal haul against SPAL last weekend inspire another clinical performance this Sunday?

Under 2.5 goals

The answer to the above question seems more likely no than yes. Firstly because Milan have found it much harder to score inside the San Siro and secondly because of injuries to Kalinic and Kessie who have eight league goals between them. Milan’s 11 league games at home this season have seen just 21 goals go in so under 2.5 goals here is available at a very good price.

Draw

Both these sides are enjoying unbeaten domestic runs at the moment and it’s looking like they may well cancel each other out on Sunday evening. Milan have recently drawn against two sides close to them in the table, Lazio and Udinese; and Sampdoria were held by Torino earlier this month. You look at who could potentially make the difference for either side here and with no name jumping out, a draw looks to be a wise bet.

Correct score 1-1

This fixture has a recent history of low scoring affairs so if things do end up all square here, a 1-1 scoreline looks the most probable. Sampdoria rarely keep a clean sheet away but Milan’s lack of attacking fluency at home means they won’t be able to take full advantage. Two of Sampdoria’s last four games have ended 1-1 and you can get odds of 13/2 to make it three from five.
