Roma Form

Roma suffered a truly horrible patch of form between mid-December and the end of January. After being Cagliari 1-0 on the 16th December, the Giallorossi then failed to win any of their next seven matches. The Roma board stuck by boss Eusebio Di Francesco during this time though and they’ve seen results pick up just lately. The side from Italian capital have now claimed three consecutive Serie A victories. Two came against sides in the relegation zone however so it’s important not to read too much into the victories.

When faced against higher quality opposition in Champions League on Wednesday, Roma returned to their winless ways, losing 2-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk. It’s important to point out that the Ukrainians did beat Napoli and Man City at home in the group stages so a one goal defeat is far from a terrible result. Di Francesco publically bemoaned his side’s lack of focus after the game adding that he should have subbed half the team after conceding their first goal. Will the Roma manager’s harsh post-match comments inspire a fired up response from his men or will his tactic backfire and lead to unrest in the dressing room?

AC Milan Form

There haven’t been too many moments for Milan fans to celebrate in recent seasons but they must be delighted how things have been over the last couple of months. The Milan faithful haven’t seen their side lose a single game since Christmas and Genaro Gattuso has had a big hand in transforming this previously underperforming team. They cruised to the Europa League last 16 with ease, winning 4-0 on aggregate and remain in the Coppa Italia, on the cusp of the final. Confidence is flowing among the Rossoneri and they’ll not be fearing their trip to the Stadio Olimpico this Sunday.

It’s not just the cup competitions in which Milan have impressed lately either as their league form has seen them rise up the table. Coming into this weekend only goal difference was keeping them outside of the top six. Gattuso’s men are unbeaten in seven Serie A contests and have won four of the last five including games against Lazio and Sampdoria, both of who lie higher up in the table. They’ve not managed to score more than twice in a game during this time except against lowly SPAL but they are gaining an increasing knack for grinding out results.

Head to Head Stats

Milan have collected more red cards than victories against Roma of late. They’ve seen red in three of the last seven meetings, winning just one of them in this time.

Roma have come out on top on the last four consecutive occasions against Milan but have they got what it takes to extend this winning streak?

Injuries & Suspensions

There are very few players absent for this clash, allowing both managers to name a strong starting eleven on Sunday.

  • Rick Karsdorp - May not feature again this season after cruciate ligament rupture
  • Maxime Gonalons - Calf problem has kept him out since early January

AC Milan

  • Andre Conti - Closing in on a return following five months out
  • Marco Storari - Reserve keeper has almost recovered from a calf problem

Betting Tips

Roma have a great recent record against Milan but with the Rossoneri in such good form of late, something has to give.

Draw

Despite three consecutive league wins, Roma are not back to their best and are still some way from it. Their only home win in the last five attempts came against rock bottom Benevento and visiting teams travel there now expecting to get a result. Milan on the other hand are unbeaten in their last five away matches, although you can’t say they’ve been overly tested in this time. The toughest game of the lot was arguably against mid-table Udinese which ended as a draw. Roma shouldn’t provide a much sterner test than this though, making another draw worth betting on.

Under 2.5 goals

Whenever these two sides are involved in a tough game there is often a lack of goals as the emphasis unusually turns towards defence. Roma’s contests against Sampdoria (x2) and Inter last month all saw under 2.5 goals as did Milan’s most recent meetings against Sampdoria, Lazio and Fiorentina. There were just the two goals when these sides met earlier in the season and another low scoring contest seems to be on the cards.

AC Milan to win or draw

While our main tip for this game is a draw, if any side can nick it then there’s reason to think it’ll be the visitors. Roma’s attack isn’t firing on all cylinders at the moment and this Milan defence is proving to be a very tough one to break down. In their last six matches Gattuso’s side have shipped in just a single goal. With such solid foundations, Milan should be able to avoid defeat here.
