AS Roma v Lazio Betting Tips & Preview – Sunday 15th April 2018

The race for the top four in Serie A looks like going right down to the wire. Coming into this weekend’s round of matches, Roma and Lazio occupy the last two available spots but have Inter lurking one point behind.

A win for either of these sides in the Rome derby would give them a massive boost in their aim to secure a Champions League place next season. For Roma this is a standard requirement for a season but their neighbours haven’t featured in the competition proper since 2007/08.

Lazio Form

Lazio hit a rough patch of form beginning at the end of January which saw them lose three consecutive Serie A matches. Things have been improved lately though with the Biancocelesti losing just one league contest since, a slender one at the hands of league leaders Juventus. During the last two weekends, Lazio have been able to collect maximum points, first came the 6-2 hammering of Benevento and then there was a rather more hard fought win away at Udinese.

It was the match against Benevento that perhaps sums up Lazio the best however, excellent going forward but far from solid at the back. After 31 games in Serie A, Lazio had the 10th best defensive record in the league but were top of the scoring charts, narrowly edging out Juventus. Their attacking playing style was also on show during the first leg of their Europa league clash with Salzburg that ended 4-2 to the Italians. It was another match in which Ciro Immobile found the back of the net and the 28-year-old has been in sensational form this season.

Roma Form

Roma didn’t enjoy the best of weeks last week having lost 4-1 to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League tie then losing at home to Fiorentina in Serie A. This week however has been one that will go down in Roma’s history after dumping Barcelona out of the Champions League. It was only the third time in the competition’s history that a club has been able to overturn a three goal deficit and Eusebio Di Francesco’s men richly deserved it too. They were the better side over the two legs and dominated the Catalan outfit inside the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma could secure a Champions League place for next season by winning the competition but a top four league finish is the safer way of going about it. In Serie A the Giallorossi hit a superb patch in early March, winning away at Napoli and then cruising past Torino at home. An expected 2-0 win against Crotone followed but the good run came to an end against Bologna as they could only salvage a draw. Di Francesco’s side somehow didn’t return to winning ways against Fiorentina last weekend despite bossing the entire game. The visitors scored with both their two shots on goal while Roma converted none of their 25.

Head to Head Stats

You’ll not be surprised to read that this feisty derby has seen plenty of red cards. Since 2011, a total of 12 players have been sent off, averaging 0.7 red cards per game. That’s a staggering stat that makes the Merseyside derby look like a friendly. In terms of results, Roma have enjoyed the better of the Rome derby over the past few seasons. They’ve won seven of the last 11 meetings compared to Lazio’s two.

Injuries & Suspensions

There are very few injuries to worry about in this match so both managers will have the benefit of being able to field strong line-ups.

Lazio

  • Patric - Spaniard is a doubt due to a recent muscular problem.

Roma

  • Rick Karsdorp - Not yet recovered from cruciate ligament rupture.
  • Diego Perotti - Absent for last two matches but is contention for a return this Sunday.

Betting Tips

Roma have the benefit of a couple day’s more rest ahead of this derby clash which is one that looks like it could be settle by the finest of margins.

Roma to win

Roma have been the more dominant force against their local rivals in the past few seasons and this is a trend you should back to continue. The Giallorossi performed brilliantly against Barcelona on Tuesday, just as they did in their last big Serie A test, the 4-2 win over Napoli. Their confidence will be absolutely sky high right now and it’s hard to say they are badly priced for the three points.

Over 2.5 goals

This might be a feisty derby but it is certainly not a cagey one. There have been a total of 21 goals the last six times the sides have met and more goals can be expected for this upcoming clash. 10 of Lazio’s last 13 league matches have seen more than two goals and both sides have been creating an abundance of chances in recent weeks.

Roma to win and Both Teams to Score

At odds of 10/3, you will get some decent returns if this bet comes off. It’s hard to imagine a side as free scoring as Lazio not finding the back of the net here even if they aren’t able to win the game. Inzaghi’s men will pile men forward even if it leaves them exposed at the back and you should fancy them to keep Allison busy in the Roma goal.
