Arnold Palmer Invitational Betting Tips & Preview – Thursday 15th March 2018

We’re getting ever closer to major season in the world of golf. As the build up to the Masters continues, so do the huge PGA Tour events which serve as the perfect warm up. After a quality renewal of the Valspar Championship it’s time for another tournament with a distinctly major-like feel, the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Another incredibly strong field has been assembled in Florida, this time at Bay Hill Club and Lodge. It’s the club that Arnold Palmer put so much of his time and effort into and the course at which Tiger Woods (the bookies’ favourite for this week) has won eight times.

Tips and Predictions

There is no doubt that Tiger Woods will be the main story pretty much no matter who wins the trophy on Sunday evening. He was just one shot shy of a playoff at the Valspar and his record at Bay Hill means his favouritism is no shock. Tiger clearly has a chance but there’s a slight feel of the bookies trying to capitalise on the hype around him and his price looks too short for a man still making a comeback.

As Bay Hill is such a classic track it is no surprise that Justin Rose usually plays well there. He’s placed no worse than 15th on five occasions and finished ninth and 13th on his two appearances since the renovations. Rose’s quality all-round play last week went under the radar due to Woods and Paul Casey’s win but he could grab the headlines come Sunday by winning at 14/1 with Ladbrokes.

Tyrrell Hatton made a strong impression on American golf fans with a top five finish on his Arnold Palmer Invitational debut last year. Impressively, Hatton has managed to maintain his form fairly consistently throughout the year that’s passed and he returns to Bay Hill with every chance of challenging again at 28/1 with Betfred.

Tournament Info

  • Back to Bay Hill - This is the 40th edition of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to be held at Bay Hill and the fourth since major renovation work
  • Tiger’s records - Tiger Woods hold all sorts of records in this tournament including winning $2 million more than the second highest earner Vijay Singh and becoming the first man to win a PGA Tour event four years in a row
  • Make your scores on the par fives - Bay Hill’s par threes are known as being very tough but the par fours aren’t much easier so par five scoring is vital
  • Respect to the King - This is the second Arnold Palmer Invitational since the host’s passing so expect more tributes to the man many credit as the founding father of modern golf

Other Bets and Odds

Louis Oosthuizen has only made a handful of appearances at Bay Hill but he’s played well at the course since the changes to the layout were made. This is a ball strikers’ course where hitting fairways and greens is the key to success. Providing Oosthuizen can leave the majority of his approach shots under the hole to allow him to be aggressive with his putter, he could go all the way and win at a generous 55/1 with Bet365.
