Italy v Scotland Betting Tips & Preview – Saturday 17th March 2018

Conor O’Shea’s Italy and Gregor Townsend’s Scotland do battle at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Saturday afternoon for their final 2018 Six Nations match. Before this weekend’s fixtures, the Italians are rock bottom – where they will stay no matter what – while the Scots sit fifth on eight points. With only three points separating Wales, England, France and Scotland, Townsend’s troops will be looking to finish as high as third in the table.

In truth, the Italians have been well out of their depth again this year, but can they end their disappointing campaign with an unlikely win on Saturday? The Scots, who head to the Italian capital as big favourites, will be hoping to make it three wins out of five and their fans will be fully expecting them to deliver.

Italy Form

Italy have been heavily beaten by England, Ireland, France and Wales so far. Along the way, O’Shea’s side have conceded 23 tries and a staggering 174 points. However, they have also managed to score nine tries themselves, two more than France and Scotland. Despite having one or two positive moments here and there, Azzurri have ultimately struggled again and questions about their involvement will continue to be asked.

In Cardiff last Sunday, Italy crashed to a 38-14 defeat in another disappointing display. The Italians won’t avoid finishing bottom, but can they give their fans something to cheer about with a home win over Scotland at the weekend?

Scotland Form

Scotland have had a topsy-turvy campaign this year, which has seen them be thumped by Wales but earn their first victory over England in 10 years. However, too many mistakes have cost the Scots any chance of challenging for this year’s crown.

Townsend’s side responded from their embarrassing opening weekend loss to Wales with superb back-to-back wins over France and England respectively. However, Scotland struggled to cope with Ireland’s deadly attack in Dublin last weekend, losing 28-8 at the Aviva Stadium. Nevertheless, a win and a bonus point on Italian soil this Saturday will take them to 13 points from a possible 25.

Head to Head Stats

Since losing to Italy 22-19 at Murrayfield Stadium back in the 2015 Six Nations, Scotland have won each of the last five meetings between the two. In last year’s tournament, the Scots whitewashed the Italians in Edinburgh with a 29-0 win. The Scots have won eight of their last nine games against Azzurri in all competitions.

Since Italy moved from the Stadio Flaminio into the Olimpico, the Italians have only beaten Scotland once. In fact, since being invited to participate in this tournament in 2000, Italy have won just seven of the 18 meetings. Who will come out on top in the Italian capital in this one?

Injuries & Suspensions

Italy have no fresh injury concerns as they look to end their tournament with a win. The Scots still have several big players out through injury, although Richie Vernon, who has been side-lined for nearly a year with an Achilles problem, has been included in Scotland’s squad.

  • Michele Campagnaro - Side-lined with a knee ligament problem
  • Ornel Gega - Missing with a serious knee problem
  • Angelo Esposito - Out with a knee injury

  • Duncan Taylor - Side-lined with a calf injury
  • Richie Gray - Out with a calf problem

  • Tim Visser - Ruled out with a head injury
  • Rob Harley - Out with a wrist problem

Betting Tips

Italy have huffed and puffed in this tournament but have not had the quality to match any of their opponents despite managing to bag nine tries in four games. Scotland have had a mixed bag of performances, but if results go their way on Saturday, Townsend’s side could finish as high as third. The away team will be looking for a big win to end their 2018 Six Nations tournament in style.

Scotland -17

Scotland were good against France and outstanding against England but were poor in defeats to Wales and Ireland. With several players hoping to impress their boss in the final match, the Scots will want to end with a flourish, so back them to win -17 at 10/11.

Scotland HT/FT

Scotland will be looking for a fast start in Rome and hope to dominate from the first whistle to the last. We fancy the Scots to be winning at half time and full time, which you can get at 5/13.

Odd Points

The last two meetings between Italy and Scotland have ended in odd scorelines. For odd points to be scored in this one, check out the price of 10/11, albeit just for a bit of fun!
